Revolution OS

Category: Free Software,Linux,Televisiondavid @ 20:46

Interesting film/documentary that I think is interesting to watch, at least once.

REVOLUTION OS tells the inside story of the hackers who rebelled against the proprietary software model and Microsoft to create GNU/Linux and the Open Source movement.

On June 1, 2001, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said “Linux is a cancer that attaches itself in an intellectual property sense to everything it touches.”

Microsoft fears GNU/Linux, and rightly so. GNU/Linux and the Open Source & Free Software movements arguably represent the greatest threat to Microsoft’s way of life. Shot in cinemascope on 35mm film in Silicon Valley, REVOLUTION OS tracks down the key movers and shakers behind Linux, and finds out how and why Linux became such a potent threat.

REVOLUTION OS features interviews with Linus Torvalds,Richard Stallman, Bruce Perens, Eric Raymond, Brian Behlendorf, Michael Tiemann, Larry Augustin, Frank Hecker, and Rob Malda.

Building a simple compiler in Java

Category: Compilersdavid @ 11:17

In the following posts I will explain how to implement a simple compiler in Java. This implementation is part of a university assignment, so it will be based on the requirements set by my professor.

There will be two versions of it, fist a compiler for arithmetic operations and after finishing the first one a compiler for a simple programming language based on the previous work.

Useful software in Ubuntu

Category: Free Software,Linuxdavid @ 14:44

Hello all!
This post will be about interesting software that you can use in Ubuntu. Since this is the software I currently use, I cannot compare it with Windows/Mac alternatives. Actually, there are Windows & Mac versions of these programs, which are the ones I use when not using Linux.

DISCLAIMER: I don’t use Unity because I think it *****, so in some explanations I use the “Classic” GNOME way.

DISCLAIMER 2: I don’t like GNOME3 either.
